Principal's Message

School MuralWelcome to the 2022-23  school year at Riverview Alternative School (also known as “The River”). We are a K-6 school and home to 270+ students and growing! Our mantra is, “Go with the flow!” My name is Laurie and I am the proud Principal of the River ALT. Our River TEAM is excited to continue the good work with our Wolf pack and our valued partnership with their families!

Our school team is truly a collaborative, creative and compassionate group of educators, Office Administrators and support personnel. We strive to meet each child where they are and support them as they focus on their individual learning goals. Even our Chief Custodian, Mr. Garry, can be heard playing his ukulele or singing to spread cheer in our hallways!

Every day at the River brings joy and challenges. The students will often hear me say, “Choose kind, Mistakes are permitted “hear” and Get outside and play!”

We pride ourselves on providing safe spaces for all of our learners. We endeavour to fill each child’s “Toolbox for Life” by developing their resiliency and problem-solving skills. Our River TEAM is committed to working with your child to ensure they reach their potential in all facets of school life: academically, physically, artistically, mentally and socially. At the River, we are global thinkers. Our junior educators place a strong emphasis on lessons, activities and workshops which focus on equity and diversity. Through these varied activities and lessons, our students are encouraged to become critical thinkers. It is also our hope that when students leave The River they have discovered an interest or passion to carry them into their next learning chapter.

As part of the River magic, we very much value nature-based learning and developing a strong sense of environmental stewardship. We play in mud puddles, use sticks and enjoy numerous outdoor activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snow stomping. With our focus on being outdoors, students are also actively involved with planting school gardens and flower beds. Because of this we were awarded the Canadian Wildlife Federation Pollinators Garden Award-WildFlower distinction in 2018.

We very much value and encourage a strong partnership with our parents and guardians. From an active School Council which reflects our diverse student population; to Ms. Diane’s Best Breakfast Club in the city, having our families involved in their child’s education is an invaluable part of the River(view) life.

I hope you’ll consider following us on [email protected] for daily images of the learning and fun!

We look forward to learning with your child!
